Back on the heels of Childe Harold: arriving at La Serenissima

The excitment of Venice. Cannot wait to arrive.

Even from a distance it seems a magical place.

Am back with Childe Harold and Byron - 'the greenest island of my imagination'.
"Of Venice I shall say little. You must have seen many descriptions ; and they are most of them like."
This was a place that Byron liked moltissimo. Perhaps, as some have said, because of the water. He could row and swim. His deformity - self defined - could be minimised. He could travel by water, not walk.

At the B and B (a sumptuous Palazzo) I hear that the top floor of the Palazzo Mocenigo - Byron's former residence - on the Grand Canal - is for sale. On the ground floor Byron kept his menagerie. 'Not the piano nobile, of course, the top floor... it was rented out by a Englishman, and he's just died... you'd need a few million." But imagine the landing stage where Shelley lanbded to visit, and poor Mary Shelley (having seen her daughter Clara die on route. She is burried on the Lido. Perhaps that is another pilgrimage.)
